Whites:-
Taste the Difference Gruner Veltliner- Austria £7.50 (£5.62).
Austrian wines are still relatively unknown in the UK. This is crisp and aromatic. Great with shellfish or mildly spicy dishes.
Taste the Difference Languedoc White- France £6 (£4.50).
A blend of Grenache Blanc, Marsanne and Vermentino this is made by Jean-Claude Mas, regarded as one of the top wine makers in the region.
Peachy and nutty and quite full bodied. This normally costs £8 but is currently reduced to £6- making the further discount a no brainer.
Winemakers Selection Fiano- Italy £5 (£3.75).
Fiano is an ancient Italian grape variety that makes crisp and delicate wines. This comes from the Salento region in the “heel” of Italy. Great on it’s own or with seafood or white meats.
Reds:-
Bodegas Paninza Carinena Gran Reserva 2008- Spain £5 (£3.75).
A blend of 50% Tempranillo 40% Garnacha and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Aged 2 years in barrel and a further 3 in bottle before release. Coming from the relatively obscure region of Carinena south of Zaragoza it doesn’t have the price tag of a similar wine produced in Rioja for example.
El Pasico Old Vine Monastrell Shiraz 2012- Spain £4.75 (£3.56).
This wine hails from the Jumilla region about 100 miles west of Alicante in the south east of the country.
A blend of 90% Monastrell (known as Mourvedre in France and a key component in Chateauneuf-du-Pape) and 10% Shiraz this wine is spicy with rich dark cherry and plum flavours.Won Gold at Decanter World Wine Awards in 2013. Normally £6.50 currently reduced to £4.75.
Domaine Du Colombier Chinon 2012-France £7 (£5.25).
Red wines from the Loire are often overlooked in favour of the whites produced in the region (Sancerre/Touraine etc).
This is made from 100% Cabernet Franc and has lovely redcurrant /herbal flavours. This wine is never promoted or discounted but slips under most peoples wine buying radar. Nice after 30 minutes in the fridge.
A mixed case of these wines ( 2 of each) would normally cost £80. However the combination of the 25% reduction combined with some individual bottle discounts brings the cost down to £52.87- a saving of over £27 with an average bottle price of just £4.40.
